The mission of Collaboration Services is to provide video and collaboration related systems and services in support of education and research. This includes technical support, planning and consulting, facilitating collaboration at the University of North Dakota. With a strong background in education and technology, we emphasize the appropriate application of new and existing technologies based on the needs of faculty, staff, and students locally and at a distance for an Exceptional UND.
Each of these services has its own strengths, and supports multiple approaches to communicate, learn, and conduct research. Selecting a service is dependent upon the task at hand, and often times, more than one service may be used to most efficiently complete any given project.
Types of Services
Audio Conferencing is a way to bring multiple parties together for an audio-only meeting using a telephone or VoIP.

Video conferencing enables participants to see and hear each other in real time. Video conferences using standards based H.323 or ISDN technology must be held in a facility equipped with special equipment, or at a computer with a camera and special software. Using IVN's bridge enables these endpoints to connect to multiple sites, and to connect with endpoints using different technology. For example, by using the bridge, it is possible for a participant to join a video conference using the telephone, although the participant will not be able to see the other participants. With video conferencing, participants can also present slides, computer content, document camera and DVD/VCR for viewing by all parties.
IVN rooms are located around campus. Public rooms are scheduled by anyone and private rooms require permission by the department before using. The rooms are free for NDUS users for educational purposes including meetings. Visit the NDUS Core Technology Services site for more information.
Web conferencing enables participants to connect to each other in real time using a web browser and incorporates voice and video. Web conferencing features include slide show presentations, interactive whiteboard, application sharing, screen sharing and file transfer. Web conferencing can accommodate a greater number of participants than video conferencing, but has limited video capabilities.
Instant messaging is technology that enables participants to send messages, (chat), and respond in real time. Instant messaging clients are usually proprietary; so, AIM users can't communicate with SKYPE users, for example. In addition to typing messages, most clients have audio, video, and file transfer capabilities as well.
Streaming Media Services
CILT provides support for streaming events (live and/or archived Windows media and Real format), storage of streaming files, media conversion of DVDs, miniDV tapes and VHS tapes along with audio cassette tapes into digital formats. Lecture capture means recording classroom-based activities in a digital format that students can then watch over the web, on a computer or their mobile device. Lecture capture technology records the presenter's audio and video, as well as any visual aids (laptop, tablet, whiteboard, document camera), synchronizes them, and webcasts the stream archives for on-demand playback.
