Policy For Students Transferring To UND To Pursue A Second Baccalaureate Degree After Completion Of A First Degree Baccalaureate Degree
Background: With a growing number of students coming to UND to earn a second bachelors degree, several units asked about how we might help these students advance as quickly as possible through their degree work.
The policy was developed by an ad hoc group that included representatives of the ES Committee, the Registrars Office, the ES Office, and three units that have a number of students who the policy would affect--Nursing, Medical Lab Science, and Engineering.
Policy: For students who have previously earned a baccalaureate degree and are now enrolled at UND to earn a second baccalaureate, UND will complete the regular course-by-course evaluation. If the student has completed a baccalaureate degree at a regionally accredited institution, UND will consider the requirements for Breadth of Knowledge categories as completed.
The remaining Essential Studies requirements that will need to be completed at UND: the ES Capstone requirement and the four Special Emphasis requirements (Advanced Communication, Global Diversity, Quantitative Reasoning, and U.S. Diversity). If, however, during the course-by-course evaluation of the students transcript/s, a course is deemed to complete one of the Special Emphases, that particular requirement would be completed.
Thus, the student is expected to successfully meet the remaining Special Emphases at UND. And like all other UND undergraduate students, the student is also expected to successfully meet the ES Capstone requirement at the University.
1. The intent of the policy is to honor the philosophy and learning outcomes of Essential Studies.
2. The policy applies to all students who have completed a regionally accredited US baccalaureate degree. It does not apply to a) students who have completed a baccalaureate degree at an unaccredited institution, and it does not apply to b) students who have not completed all their degree requirements and earned the baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution.
3. A particular major or college at UND may have additional or specific requirements in addition to the Essential Studies requirements.
4. After the course-by-course review, the results will be shown in the students Academic Advisement record in Campus Connection.
Policy approved by the Essential Studies Committee, April 2, 2012
