Graduation Reminder - OPT & post-graduation options
For those of you who are planning on graduating this month, it is very important to meet with an international student advisor regarding your post-graduation plans. (i.e. employment options, transfers, new degree programs)
If you are planning on applying for OPT employment authorization the process can take several months to complete, so please schedule an appointment with your advisor as soon as possible in order to allow for processing time prior to your graduation.
Remember that F-1 and J-1 students who complete their program at the end of a term are granted a 60-day grace period during which they may remain in the U.S. During this time a student must apply for employment authorization (OPT), adjust status, change schools, or otherwise depart the U.S.
Reminder: Check your I-20 expiration date
As a general reminder, as the end of the semester approaches you should always keep the currend end date of your I-20 (or DS-2019) in mind. F-1, M-1, & J-1 students are not authorized to continue studying past the end date of their current I-20/DS-2019.
If you are not able to graduate by the date listed on your I-20, you will need to speak with an international student advisor in advance to determine what options are available for extending your program. Please call 701-777-4231 to set up an appointment with your advisor.
Summer Travel Reminders
Many international students travel during the summer, both domestically and internationally. When planning vacations and/or trips home, please keep the following in mind.
F-1 students: I-20s must be signed by an international student advisor at least once every 12 months
J-1 students: DS-2019s must be signed by an international student advisor at least once every 12 months
M-1 students: I-20s must be signed by an international student advisor at least once every 6 months.
In addition, you will want to make sure that you keep all documents with you when travelling (passport, visa, I-94 card, I-20/DS-2019, etc.) and that these documents are up to date. If you are unsure whether your documents are current, please visit with an international student advisor.
Safety & Legal Issues Reminder
As the semester draws to a close, there are many opportunities to celebrate the end of the school year. If you choose to attend functions where alcohol may be served, please take time to review city, state and federal laws on alcohol and drugs as well as the UND Code of Student Life. Remember that consumption of alcohol when you are under 21 years of age is illegal as is providing alcohol to anyone under 21. There are also laws prohibiting operating motor vehicles under the influence of alcohol, having open containers of alcohol in a vehicle, being intoxicated in public and having open containers of alcohol in public. These are some but not all of the laws.
Please remember that, as students holding F-1, J-1, or M-1 status, the consequences for being charged with any type of violation of alcohol and drug laws can be much more severe for you than it might be for your friends who are U.S. citizens and could have an impact on future visa applications.
More information on alcohol use and its side effects is also available through the UND Health and Wellness office

End of the Semester Reminders
Congratulations to everyone for almost being done with the semester! We wish you the best of the luck on all your finals!
If you are graduating in May, you will need to meet with your international student advisor to fill out the exit form, make sure all of your documents are up to date, and discuss your plans for the future. If you are thinking about applying for OPT in order to work in the US after graduation, please set up an appointment to meet with your advisor to discuss the application process.
The OPT application process requires 2 appointments with your international student advisor. The first appointment is an hour long and is a chance to learn more about the application process and the rules and guidelines of being on OPT. The second appointment is where you will bring in all the paperwork to submit the application. Please be aware that it takes 60-90 days to get a decision from USCIS on whether or not your OPT has been approved.
For continuing students, make sure that your I-20 end date isn't approaching.
