Where did you go? When?
Universite de Caen Basse-Normandie (UCBN, France) Spring 2010
Why did you pick the program and location?
I am a French major. It only made sense to supercharge my education by living, working and learning alongside other French-speakers!
Would you recommend this location to another student and why?
Yes. Basse-Normandie (Lower Normandy) is beautiful, the people kind and the education fantastic.
What was your most memorable experience/day/moment?
I could never pick one memorable moment. Every single moment, even the ones that were painful, were memorable and useful for helping others and learning.
What was the worst experience/day?
I got pneumonia. I should have gone to the doctor, but I didn't. I thought I would honestly die. I have never been so sick in my life!
What are the benefits of studying abroad? (Personal/ academic)
Studying abroad changes the way you view the world and the people who live in it. You never look at a person the same way! Academically, if you are studying to be proficient in another language not your own, there is absolutely no other way than to live, work, breathe the language in that country where the language is spoken. What advice would you give to somebody considering studying abroad?
Do your homework!!! If you have any questions about where you'll be, don't assume someone will hold your hand through the process-get out there and do it yourself. Not only is it good to be self-reliant, but you'll learn more anyway! Don't be afraid to ask alumni of the program for the details of their experiences: both good and bad. No question is a stupid question. We love talking about our experiences abroad!
