Apostille: Requesting Documents to Work Internationally
Since October 15, 1981, The United States has been part of the 1961 Hague Convention. Under the Hague Convention, signatory countries have agreed to recognize public documents issued by signatory countries if those public documents are authenticated by the attachment of an internationally recognized form of authentication known as an "apostille". The Apostille ensures that public documents issued in one signatory country will be recognized as valid in another signatory country. An Apostille is issued by the Secretary of State. The Apostille process for the University of North Dakota alumni is as follows:
To obtain an Apostille, you need to write a letter to the Office of the Registrar, 264 Centennial Dr., STOP 8382, Twamley 201, Grand Forks, ND 58202-8382 or fax your request to (701) 777-2696.
Your letter of request should include:
- request for a Duplicate Diploma ($25.00)
- request for an official transcript ($5.00)
- indication of what country the documents are being prepared
- instructions for the Office of the Registrar to release and send your documents to the Secretary of State's Office in Bismarck to be Apostilled.
- mailing instructions for Secretary of State's Office as to where the completed apostilled documents should be sent.
- credit card information and authorization for our charges (see above) as well as authorization for the Secretary of State's fee ($15.00 per diploma).
- sign your request
- provide your contact information (phone/email) in case we need to contact you during the processing.
Once we have your request and your payment we will produce the documents along with a letter signed by the University of North Dakota Registrar, all documents will be notarized and we will forward the documents to the Secretary of State's Office in Bismarck to be Apostilled.
