Essential Studies for Faculty
To be part of the ES program, a course will (more details in the links):
- Aim for and assess student learning in one of the ES goals: Communication, Diversity, Information Literacy, or Thinking & Reasoning
- Fit within one of the Breadth of Knowledge categories
- (Optional) Also, specifically aim for and assess student learning in one of the Special Emphasis outcomes:
- Or, serve as an ES Capstone course (C), a specially designed and designated culminating learning experience taken at the end of the undergraduate program of study
History of the transition to Essential Studies
In May 2007 the University Senate approved a recommendation to replace the University's General Education Program with the current Essential Studies program. That recommendation, which came about after years of work by a group consisting of members from across campus -- the General Education Task Force -- led to a year of transition that culminated in the beginning of the Essential Studies program starting with the freshman class of 2008-2009.
The links below summarize some of the work that went into this change at UND. The first link addresses the actual report from the General Education Task Force, while the second provides information that was used by the Task Force in helping to craft its recommendations.
Validating a course for ES status (Applying for ES Status)
To be part of the ES program, you can nominate a course using the appropriate ES Course Validation Form below. Your choice of form is dictated by the Breadth of Knowledge area in which the course will appear. Please read the definitions in the ES Breadth of Knowledge Area Criteria document in order to choose the appropriate form for your course.
Revalidation of ES courses (ES Course Revalidation)
Every four years, each course within the ES program must be revalidated in order to ensure it remains appropriate as an ES course. The following is the revalidation schedule for each department with current ES courses:
To help answer common questions about ES Revalidation, the following list of Frequently Asked Questions may be useful:
Direct assessment data in relation to the ES goals will be required as part of revalidation. A description of the ES goals are provided below:
Use the form below in order to complete your ES Revalidation. Please submit original plus four copies to Sharon Bruggeman, Office of the Registrar, Stop 8382.
