Dependency Status The requirements for a student to be considered "independent" for financial aid purposes are very strict. In order to be considered "independent" for financial aid purposes for the 2011-12 academic year, you must be able to answer "yes" to at least one of the following questions: 1. Were you born before January 1, 1988? 2. As if today, are you married? (Also answer "Yes" if you are separated but not divorced.) 3.
