Summer Financial Aid
General Eligibility Requirements
Students must meet financial aid eligibility requirements. The minimum (at least half-time) credit hour requirement for financial aid for the Summer Session at UND is 6 credits.
Summer financial aid awards are based on the number of credits students are enrolled in for the Summer Session. If a student’s enrollment status changes, it could affect financial aid eligibility and/or delay the receipt of financial aid funds. STUDENTS MUST INFORM THE STUDENT FINANCIAL AID OFFICE SHOULD THEIR ENROLLMENT STATUS CHANGE.
You must have a 2011-12 FAFSA on file to be considered for summer financial aid eligibility. The last day to submit a 2011-12 FAFSA online is June 30, 2012.
Students must be in compliance with the University's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy at the end of Spring Semester 2011 to receive financial aid for Summer Session 2012.
PLEASE NOTE: Spring Semester compliance with the SAP policy cannot be determined until after Summer financial aid disbursement begins. Therefore, if a student is determined to not be in compliance with SAP, they may be billed to repay any financial aid received for the Summer.
Students selected for verification or required to document independent status, must complete that process before financial aid eligibility can be determined.
For students with an unresolved financial aid HOLD, no funds will be available nor loan applications processed until the problem has been resolved.
Courses dropped before their start date may result in the repayment of financial aid received or the amount of aid awarded for the summer session.
Financial Aid Availability
Pell Grant
Congress passed a continuing resolution (CR) on April 14, 2011 which has impacted summer Pell Grant eligibility. Summer Pell Grant is based on your remaining 2011-12 eligibility (see below).
Pell Grants are available for students who meet all eligibility requirements.
Generally, you would not have any remaining eligibility for a summer Pell Grant award if you received a full-time Pell Grant for both Fall and Spring Semesters.
In most cases, if you did not receive a full-time Pell Grant award for both Fall and Spring Semesters, you are eligible for a summer Pell Grant, even if you are enrolled in less than 6 credit hours.
SEOG, Perkins Loan and Nursing Loan
Limited Nursing Loan and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) may be available for the summer term. Students will be automatically considered for the SEOG and Nursing Loan when the Financial Aid Application Supplement for Summer Session 2012 is submitted.
SEOG and Nursing Loan funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis subject to the availability of funds.
There are no Perkins Loan funds available for the summer session.
Pell Grant, SEOG, and Nursing Loan will begin crediting student accounts and excess aid refunds will be available beginning May 29.
Employment
The amount of the Federal Work Study award is an earnings limit for the period of May 16, 2012 through August 15, 2012. This award does not guarantee a job, but rather indicates eligibility to seek employment. The ability to obtain a job is determined by initiative in seeking interviews, willingness to work, job skills, available time, etc.
On May 9, 2012, summer jobs will be posted online. Students enrolled in less than 6 credit hours are no longer eligible to continue employment under the FWS program.
On May 9, 2012, summer jobs will be posted online. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 5 credit hours in the summer session to be eligible for institutional employment.
Federal Direct Loan
To borrow a Direct Loan for the first time, you must go to www.studentloans.gov:
- complete an Entrance Loan Counseling Session and
- complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN). The MPN must be completed online at the Direct Loans Master Promissory Note website. To complete an MPN online, you will be required to use your Department of Education-issued PIN. If you do not have a PIN, you may request one from the official PIN site.
Additional Direct Loan Information:
If the maximum Direct Loan per grade level was received during the Academic Year, Students will not be eligible for any additional Direct Loan during the Summer. If the student’s grade level changes, they may be eligible for an additional Direct Loan at that time by notifying the Student Financial Aid Office of this change.
A loan period of 12 weeks will be used for all loans. Summer Session financial aid will begin crediting student accounts and excess aid refunds will be available beginning May 29.
