Eligibility

Financial aid is a federal program to assist students who would otherwise be unable to afford a university education. While the primary responsibility for funding lies with students and families, financial aid can be a supplement.

Eligibility requirements:

• You must be a regularly-admitted degree-seeking student.
• Only certain certificate programs qualify for federal or state financial aid. View the list of eligible certificate programs.
• Most programs require at least half-time (6 credit hours) enrollment.
• You must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
• Most programs require that you demonstrate financial need, determined by subtracting the Expected Family Contribution (calculated on your FAFSA) from the Cost of Attendance (calculated based on tuition/fees, average expenses for books and supplies, room and board, and other personal living costs).
• You must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress as an enrolled student.
• If you are enrolled in a study abroad program approved for credit, you are considered enrolled for the purposes of applying for Federal Title IV financial assistance, providing you meet all other eligibility requirements.
• If you default on any student loan, owe a refund on a federal Pell Grant or on a Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), you are not eligible to receive federal financial assistance.
• Coursework that does not count toward the graduation requirements at UND (i.e. all audited coursework) are also not counted for federal financial aid eligibility.

FAFSA

Your first step to receiving financial aid is to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is a federal application through the U.S. Department of Education and a mandatory step for students who wish to receive financial aid.

REMEMBER: Student financial aid does not automatically continue from year to year, you MUST REAPPLY every year!

The 2013-2014 FAFSA (or Renewal Application) is available after January 1, 2013 and is used to apply for financial aid for Fall 2013, Spring 2014 and/or Summer 2014. The last day to submit a 2013-14 FAFSA online is June 30, 2014.

The priority date for 2013-14 financial aid at UND is April 15, 2013.

This means that your FAFSA must be received by the federal processing center by April 15 for priority consideration for some federal and state financial aid programs.

Apply early!  Funding is limited and not guaranteed through the priority date. Students must have a complete financial aid record to be considered for federal financial aid funds.  A complete record includes: 

• • submitted application for admission, including payment of the admission fee;
  • valid, processed* Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); and
  • financial aid satisfactory academic progress (SAP) standards met.

*Examples of issues which may delay the processing of a FAFSA include:  failure to sign the FAFSA (parent and/or student); name, date of birth and/or SSN not matching UND records or federal databases; citizenship status not matching federal databases; drug conviction; default or overpayment of federal student aid; and discharged student loans.

After you submit your FAFSA, you will receive notification as to if and how much financial aid you are awarded. The amount of financial aid you may receive is based on the difference between your estimated costs for the school year and a reasonable amount you and/or your family will contribute to those costs.

Federal regulations require that any financial assistance received in addition to the federal aid awarded by the University, be reported to the Student Financial Aid Office.

This outside assistance becomes a part of your total financial aid package.  When considering outside assistance in the financial aid package, the outside assistance is used to meet unmet financial need first, then replaces awarded loans, work-study and grants in that order, if necessary.

To report additional assistance, complete the Outside Assistance Reporting Form and submit it to the Student Financial Aid Office.  You will receive an e-mail notification to your U-Mail account when your financial aid package has been revised.

Student-Athletes on an intercollegiate sport(s) team at UND that receive any scholarships (institutional and/or external) are subject to NCAA rules and as such may not be able to accept every scholarship offered. All scholarships must be reported immediately to the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance via email or fax.

Notification must occur no later than August 1, 2013 for 2013-14.

Once you have submitted your FAFSA and UND has confirmation from the federal government as to how much aid you are awarded, a notice will be sent to your U-Mail account (your UND e-mail account).

• Please claim your U-Mail account so you can access your financial aid notice.
• Follow all instructions in your official notice and accept your financial aid awards through Campus Connection.
• Accept your award notice by the deadline given in your official notice.
• Check your To Do List or HOLDS on your CampusConnection account and follow the instructions to avoid delays in the receipt of your financial aid.
• Sign and submit a Financial Release (FERPA) Form. This allows you to get access to your financial/financial aid records by phone or e-mail and grant access to your information to parents, a spouse or others.
• Be aware of financial aid dates and deadlines.

You may request adjustments to your financial aid awards after the initial award notification has been processed.  Such adjustment requests may include requesting, canceling or reducing a Federal Work-Study or Direct Loan award; change in grade level; or change in enrollment.

To request an adjustment of financial aid awards, complete the following form and submit it to the Student Financial Aid Office.  You will receive an email notification to your U-Mail account when your financial aid package has been revised.

Please note the following regarding student loan adjustments:

• Student loan funds electronically transmitted to UND will be credited toward institutional charges.  If a credit balance exists, the excess aid will be disbursed to the student.
• You may cancel all of your student loan funds prior to the loan proceeds being applied toward institutional charges.
• You may cancel a portion of your student loan funds after the loan proceeds are applied toward institutional charges.  The portion of student loan funds that may be canceled is the amount of loan funds received as excess aid.
• You may request cancellation of excess loan funds up to 30 days after disbursement.

Students Who Marry After Completing the FAFSA:

Federal regulations do not allow students who marry after completing the FAFSA as a single student to complete a second FAFSA after they are married. For financial aid purposes your marital status for the current award year will remain as it was the day the FAFSA was signed.

Files containing information regarding individual students are not open to the general public under the provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.
