Verification
Verification is a comparison of the FAFSA information with IRS data and other external documentation. If you are selected for verification by the Department of Education or UND, you must complete the verification process if you are interested in receiving federal, state and some types of institutional financial aid.
If you are selected, you may be asked to verify information such as income, federal income tax paid, household size, status as a dependent or independent student, citizenship, etc.
If you have been selected for verification, UND will send a request for required documentation to the HOME address in CampusConnection. This list of required documents is also available in the To Do list in CampusConnection. Subsequent notifications for documentation will be sent to the student's UND email address (Live@edu).
2012-2013
The Department of Education has made major changes to the verification process beginning with the 2012-2013 academic year. Changes include items to be verified and documentation required for verification. Click here for information on completing the FAFSA to avoid verification delays.
The links below are to UND's Verification Worksheets. If you have been selected for verification (noted on your Student Aid Report), you must complete the appropriate Verification Worksheet. UND will send you a request for documentation providing more detailed information on the process. A list of requested items is also found on the student's TO DO list on the Student Center page of CampusConnection.

Tax Information:
As part of this process, if tax information was not downloaded from the IRS as part of the FAFSA application process (or if changes were made to the downloaded information), students must provide the Student Financial Aid Office with their (and spouse's or parents') Federal Tax Return Transcript and in some cases, statements from the Social Security Administration, Veteran's Administration or other agencies to verify benefits students and/or their family have received. Please note that copies of your Federal Tax Return are no longer accepted!
If you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval download process in the FAFSA, you may also go to the FAFSA website, www.fafsa.gov, click Start Here, and make a correction to your FAFSA by using the IRS Data Retrieval process. If this is successful, you will not have to provide a Tax Return Transcript.
How to Request a Tax Return Transcript:
- Order online at www.irs.gov. Click on Order a Return or Account Transcript under Tools. Make sure you order the Tax Return Transcript, not the Tax Account Transcript!
- Call Toll free: 1-800-908-9946

Tax Information
As part of this process, if tax information was not downloaded from the IRS as part of the FAFSA application process (or if changes were made to the downloaded information), students must provide the Student Financial Aid Office with their (and spouse’s or parents') Federal Income Tax Return and in some cases, statements from the Social Security Administration, Veteran's Administration or other agencies to verify benefits students and/or their family have received.
If you do not have a copy of your tax return, you can obtain a "Summary Transcript of Tax Return" from the IRS by calling 1-800-829-1040 or by completing Form 4506T (Transcript of Tax Form) or Form 4506 (Copy of Tax Form). You can also obtain Form 4506T or 4506 from a fax machine (dial 703-368-9694 and follow the voice prompts).
If information on any of these documents conflicts with the information reported on the FAFSA, you may be required to provide additional information. Failure to provide proof may result in the cancellation of aid from all of the Title IV programs and may also result in the cancellation of aid from other sources.
