MacKenzie Cochran Awarded Vikings + UND and Me $10,000 Academic Scholarship
Congratulations to MacKenzie Cochran, of Sebeka, MN, who was awarded the 2014 Vikings + UND and Me $10,000 academic scholarship provided by the Minnesota Vikings and the University of North Dakota!
Cochran was presented with a "big check" by retired Vikings great and former UND standout player Jim Kleinsasser during the Vikings home game against the Detroit Lions on December 29, 2013. The money will help to pay for college expenses when she attends UND in fall 2014 with plans to major in atmospheric sciences.
"I had just finished my first-ever visit to UND when I got the news," said Cochran, a National Honor Society member whose favorite subjects are chemistry, physics and mathematics. "I couldn't stop smiling, and it just felt unreal. I was excited to tell my family. This scholarship is terrific for me because it will go towards tuition. It takes a big load off my mind."
Cochran was awarded the scholarship based on her high school GPA/ACT scores, academic achievements and honors, community involvement, and extra-curricular activities. She also provided a written personal essay highlighting her career goals, and why she desired to study at UND.
"It's been common knowledge in my family that UND's program for atmospheric sciences is excellent," Cochran said. "My dad helped me to research different college programs, but this one always stood out. I would like to organize research on severe storms and gain a further understanding of how they develop to aid in forecasting."
Cochran is the third Vikings + UND and Me scholarship recipient. Previous scholarship recipients include: 2013 winner Clair Mastel, Biology / Pre-Health Sciences major from Elk River, MN, and 2012 winner Jacob Greenmyer, Biology major / Honors Program from Stirum, ND.
