The Visiting Artist Series presents Javier Carmona, professor of Photography and discipline head of Digital Cinema at Dominican University, Chicago.
Born in 1972, in Guanajuato, México, and a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2001, Javier Carmona works in that intersection between the still photograph and the motion picture. Many of these works see him also in the role of actor, initially out of necessity, while acknowledging an autobiographic need to do so.
Recent exhibitions include L’art 23tres Contemporary Art, Mexico City; Peeler Art Center at DePauw University; Wilmer Jennings Gallery, New York; Galería La Masmédula, Mexico City; National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago; and the Museum of Pocket Art. He has been awarded the New Works Award from Nueva Luz, the Joseph Fellowship as an Artist in Residence at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, and in 2013 the Individual Artist Support Grant for Photography by the Illinois Arts Council. Carmona holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from the University of New Mexico. He lives and teaches in the Chicago area, while visualizing many recent projects in Mexico and Italy.
