Atmospheric Sciences will host the Northern Plains Convective Storm Symposium on Monday, May 13, in 210 Clifford Hall. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is open to anyone who wishes to attend. The Symposium will continue on Tuesday, May 14, from 8 a.m. to noon.
The Northern Plains Convective Storm Symposium (NPCSS) is a meeting where individuals with an interest in convective weather can exchange ideas, case studies, preliminary or finalized research findings, new forecasting techniques and technologies, communications tools and methods and meteorological decision support.
Anyone who wishes to conduct a presentation on anything that relates to the symposium topics is welcome to submit an abstract. The purpose of this meeting is for individuals to share their knowledge with others and further both public and scientific understanding of the atmosphere and its related components.
The primary focus of the symposium is the Northern Plains of the United States and Canadian Prairies. However, presentations focusing on winter convection, summertime convection outside this region and topics other than convective weather are also welcome.
About 20 people took part in last year’s symposium, where topics such as the link between cloud-base height and tornado genesis, fire tornadoes, the June 17, 2010 tornado outbreak and how the weather impacts emergency management were discussed.
