Indians in Education Seminar
Thursday, October 31, 2013 10 AM - 12 PM
John Gonzalez, a member of the White Earth Anishinaabe Nation and an associate professor of psychology at Bemidji State University, will present "Everything you wanted to know about Indians in education, but were afraid to ask" from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Oct. 31, in the Memorial Union Lecture Bowl. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from UND through the support of the Indians into Psychology Doctoral Education (INPSYDE) Program. He is an alumnus of BSU, where he received his undergraduate degree in psychology.
Gonzalez's professional interests are in cultural psychology, multicultural psychology, and community psychology. All of these areas come together to provide a holistic view of people and their environments.
His research interests are in the areas of mental and behavioral health for indigenous people and ethnic minorities, with an emphasis on understanding ethnic and cultural identity factors. Related to this, he has engaged in community-based participatory research methods, which involve developing and building relationships with communities to work collaboratively to address the issues the community views as important. He has a record of publishing and presenting in the areas of multicultural and cultural psychology, with an emphasis on indigenous populations.
Gonzalez's presentation is sponsored by the Seven Generations Center of Excellence in Native Behavioral Health(SGCoE) at the Center for Rural Health, UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
