On Teaching Seminar
Tuesday, November 26, 2013 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM
Metacognition involves assessing one’s own learning and performance and adapting or developing new strategies for new situations. Studies have indicated that university students don’t do this as well or as often as needed. How can instructors help students develop metacognition to help them succeed as learners?
Researchers in the fields of composition and applied linguistics have studied metacognition’s role in the development of language and writing expertise. Specifically, research has focused on how metacognitive awareness about writing changes over time, how students use prior knowledge when they approach new writing tasks, and how writing knowledge transfers (or doesn’t transfer) to new writing situations. This On Teaching session offers an overview of this research and some strategies for leveraging metacognition to help students develop as writers. This session will be facilitated by Kathleen Vacek, University Writing Program Coordinator.
Please join us for this breakfast On Teaching seminar. If you are interested in helping students become self-directed learners, this is a conversation for you. Please register by noon Friday, Nov. 22, to attend and reserve breakfast.
