In 2008, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals in Albania faced widespread isolation, hostility, discrimination, arbitrary arrests and mistreatment. Earlier activists, facing serious threats to their lives and safety, left the country. The country was empty of public visibility or presence of LGBT people: no LGBT public spaces, no cafes, no bars, no social groups, no advocacy groups, no accessible community, not one openly gay or lesbian Albanian. Melissa Schraibman, a U.S. Department of Justice attorney who served as the Department’s Resident Legal Advisor in Albania from 2006-2010, will discuss the circumstances and events leading up to the formation of an enormously effective Albanian LGBT movement, which has transformed the landscape of Albania to a place of hope and progress for LGBT Albanians.
