Gene and Maria DuBois Retirement Reception
Wednesday, April 30, 2014 3 PM - 5 PM
Please join us to honor and celebrate Gene and Maria DuBois at their retirement reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at the North Dakota Museum of Art.
Gene DuBois, Associate Professor of Spanish, joined the faculty of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at the University of North Dakota in 1986, after completing his Ph.D. in Spanish at the University of California, Riverside in 1981. Dr. DuBois is a specialist in Medieval and Golden Age Spanish literature, spanning a number of literary movements and styles such as Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque and Rococo. During the course of his 28-year career at UND Dr. DuBois has taught a variety of courses in his area of expertise as well as the full spectrum of courses in the Spanish curriculum. Dr. DuBois’ ability and willingness to teach such a wide range of courses has been great asset to the Spanish program. Despite heavy teaching responsibilities, Dr. DuBois has also maintained an active research program resulting in many publications and conference presentations. Finally, Dr. DuBois has served in numerous administrative and service capacities, most notably Chair of the Languages Department, Languages Advisory Committee, Spanish Section Coordinator, and a wide range of departmental, college and university committees.
Dr. DuBois has made important contributions to the Spanish program, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, and the university community at large. His humor, wit, erudition, and institutional knowledge will be sorely missed. We in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures invite all members of the university community to join us in wishing Dr. DuBois and his wife Maria all the best as they retire and move on to the next phase of their lives.
Maria DuBois began her career at UND in 1992 as a teacher of Italian language. When Italian was removed from the curriculum, she moved on to teach language courses in Spanish. From the fall of 1994 to the present, she has taught Spanish 101 through Spanish 202 with extraordinary success. Not only has she been a popular teacher, she has been a support and a mentor to her students, providing the individual attention they all need. Many of her students have gone on to major and minor in Spanish. Many decided to study abroad. Many placed in law, medical, and business schools, graduate programs and private sector companies. Amongst her colleagues in the Languages department she is valued for her warm persona and excellent teaching and insightful contributions to the Spanish Language Program. We wish her happiness and the best of luck during this next phase of her life. We will miss her.
