The Department of Music presents a Lecture Series on Tuesday nights in the Josephine Campbell Recital Hall (Room 202) of the Hughes Fine Arts Center. The lectures begin at 7 p.m. and will be completed by 8 p.m.
Surviving Lecture: A Pedagogical Alternative
Learning the fundamentals of music theory requires the assimilation of a lot of material in a relatively short period of time. “Theory Survivor,” an instructional game based on the Survivor reality show concept, provides a successful alternative to the traditional lecture method of teaching music theory. This lecture will outline the Theory Survivor method and pedagogical benefits as well as provide a demonstration of the game in action!
Whitney Berry is a lecturer at the University of North Dakota where she
teaches Music Theory and Aural Skills courses and is currently completing
her Ph.D. in music education. Her major area of research is in college music
theory pedagogy, with particular focus on composition- and games-based
instruction.
Ms. Berry is a frequent guest speaker and clinician in the Grand Forks area,
presenting courses, workshops and guest lectures on her innovative and
creative teaching methods to faculty and graduate students as well K-12
public school and private music teachers in the community.
