Breanna Baerwald, Intern
Breanna Baerwald is a junior earning her double major in Criminal Justice and International Studies at the Universtiy of North Dakota. Her areas of interest include genocide in Europe WWII to present. Breanna spent the summer of her sophomore year studying abroad in Germany. She will continue her studies in Prague in the summer of 2012 to expand her understanding of the complexities of human rights and past genocide in Eastern Europe. She has been a member of the UND Criminal Justice Association since September of 2010 and is currently the Public Relations Officer for the organization. Breanna is also a member of the Criminal Justice Honor Society, Alpha Pi Sigma. Other memberships include German Club and UND Pro-Choice Voice. In developing awareness for all members of society, Breanna has volunteered with Special Olympics and the UND International Center. She currently works for University of North Dakota Housing at the Walsh Service Center, a position she has held since October 2009. Breanna began her internship with CHRGS in April 2011 and has served many capacities for the organization. Her duties include organizing and planning events that coincide with the center's mission. Once her internship is completed, Breanna intends to attend law school in pursuit of her J.D. and simultaneously labor to obtain her MPA in Public Administration.
Clarinda Solberg, Intern
Clarinda Solberg is a senior majoring in International Studies at the University of North Dakota and focuses her studies on the cycle of development in Africa as pertains to human rights, colonialism and genocide. As a sophomore, she served as a Resident Assistant for the UND Housing Office and was on the Staff Recruitment and Retention Committee in which she assisted in the development of training programs for current and future Resident Assistants. She has also served as a Community Assistant and participated in InteRAction, an organization for RAs and CAs. She began working as an intern for the UND Center for Human Rights and Genocide Studies in the fall of 2010. Her duties include assistance with planning and coordinating events, developing and maintaining the CHRGS website, working with and coordinating student volunteers, and contributing to the organization and dissemination of CHRGS archives. When not working for CHRGS, Clarinda also serves as a volunteer for the Grand Forks Friends Coalition mentoring refugees. Recently, she lived in Arusha, Tanzania studying a range of topics concerning Africa by professionals from the continent. She also taught English at a nearby school, challenging her students to consider more sustainable solutions for the obstacles they see their generation facing today and in the future. Her time there in close proximity to United Nations grounds has assisted in current endeavors as she is currently conducting research for an undergraduate thesis in the area of genocide recurrence in Rwanda and plans to live in Kampala, Uganda upon graduation.
Clarinda has been a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars since 2009, has been awarded positions on both the Dean’s List and the President’s Honors List all eligible semesters and is a member and scholarship recipient of the University of North Dakota Honors Program. Clarinda has served as the Executive Treasurer (2009-10) and fills the position of Executive Secretary (2010-11) in the Honors Program Student Organization. She became a member of the African Studies Association in 2010 and has received numerous scholarships throughout her time at the University of North Dakota.
