The University of North Dakota is the state's most comprehensive intensive resarch university and the primary center for professional education and training.
UND's economic impact on the state and region is $1.3 billion. Levels of business activity resulting from UND expenditures supported 3,502 secondary (indirect and induced) jobs in 2011. In addition, direct impact of student spending in the Grand Forks area was $120.5 million in fiscal year 2011.
UND also exerts an economic impact through its graduates. The University has provided about 66 percent of family medicine physicians in North Dakota, and has educated a significant number of the engineers and oil and gas experts working in the oil industry that is so critical to the state's economic health.
According to the latest placement study, 60 percent of UND graduates who also graduated from a North Dakta high school remained in North Dakota, thereby contributing to its economy.
