Office of General Counsel
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Office of General Counsel (OGC) is to advise and represent the University of North Dakota.
Purpose and Objectives:
Members of the Office of General Counsel (OGC) provide legal services to the University of North Dakota in a variety of areas, manage the University’s legal affairs, and are responsible for protecting the University’s legal interests. The OGC supports the University in its mission as a public institution of higher education by providing legal advice and coordinating legal representation for the University as a whole.
The OGC delivers ethical, timely, efficient and high quality legal services to the University ’s many academic departments and business units. Our services include—but are not limited to—prosecuting and defending litigation, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements, providing advice, counsel and interpretation of laws, regulations and policies, and assisting with the development of effective compliance and risk management strategies to facilitate and support the University’s complex operations. In providing these services, it is anticipated that the types of legal risks and liabilities facing the University can be minimized and controlled, and that those officials who must make decisions on behalf of the institution will be provided with appropriate assistance in analyzing those risks and liabilities.
In order to best serve our University client, while recognizing the need for timely and responsive advice and counsel, it is the goal of OGC staff to deliver the highest quality legal services.
The OGC cannot provide personal legal advice or representation to individual members of the University of North Dakota community on matters not related to their official University duties and responsibilities.
