Color Palettes
UND Design Tiers
Tier 1 - External Communications
- Consists of major print and digital communications created for external audiences, including prospective students and the general public. Some major internal communications may also follow Tier 1 (e.g., UND Directory).
- At least one color from the Primary Color Palette (green or orange) must be the most dominant color in the design. Additional UND Colors (white, black, gray) and the Secondary Color Palettes may be used as accent colors.
- If the Primary Color Palette is not used in Tier 1 communications, there should be a specific reason (i.e., one-color publication, photography-based layout, etc).
Examples
- Viewbooks and materials for prospective students
- Academic catalogs
- Online banner ads
- Magazine or newspaper advertisements
- Tradeshow materials
Tier 2 - Combination of Internal/External Communications
- Consists of print and digital communications created primarily for internal audiences, but may be viewed by external audiences. For example, print materials designed for UND alumni fall into Tier 2.
- The Primary Color Palette is present, but the Secondary Color Palette may be prominent.
- If the Primary Color Palette is not used at all in Tier 2 communications, there should be a specific reason (i.e., one-color publication, photography-based layout, etc).
Examples
- Events open to both UND and the public, e.g., Writer's Conference, Homecoming
- E-newsletters targeted to alumni, e.g., AroUND
- Promotions for an internal audience that are also distributed off campus, e.g., ND Spirit Week
Tier 3 - Internal Communications
- Print and digital communications designed for UND’s internal audiences, including current students, faculty and staff.
- Primary colors do not need to be dominant. It is recommended that Tier 3 designs use colors within the Primary and/or Secondary Color Palettes, but it is not required.
Examples
- Campus events not open to the public
- Flyers for intercampus mail
- Online employee newsletter

Additional UND Colors
Black, gray (a percentage of black), and white are commonly used with the Primary Color Palette.
Although pink is an official University color, it is not recommended for use as a dominant design color, except in the case of official ceremonial events (e.g., commencement) or for special designs where pink has significance (e.g., Breast Cancer Awareness).

The Primary Color Palette should be the dominant colors in University designs, but they may be enhanced by a palette of secondary colors.
Refer to the UND Design Tiers above for guidance on the use of the Primary and Secondary Color Palettes.
Secondary Color Palette
To assist with color decisions and to create more visual consistency for UND's identity, a Secondary Color Palette is offered to complement the Primary Color Palette and the Additional UND Colors.
For print and digital designs in Tier 1 and Tier 2, designers are encouraged to select colors within the Primary and Secondary Color Palettes, but they may use additional colors if needed.
