The Primary UND Logotype is the official mark of the University of North Dakota. It is the most identifiable image that the University uses to represent itself in all communications.
The Primary UND Logotype consists of two elements:
- The Flame Logo, which is a graphic rendition of the acronym "UND"
- The University Signature with the words "University of North Dakota"
These two elements work together to create the official Primary UND Logotype and a consistent graphic identity for the University.
The Primary UND Logotype is the preferred logo design and should not be altered in any way. It should be used whenever possible on all advertising, publications, and other University communications.
Secondary UND Logos and Marks
Several secondary variations of UND logos and marks are available to meet different design needs.
The Vertical UND Logotype may be used when:
- Horizontal space is limited, e.g., promotional items, ads
- The UND Logotype must be placed in a grouping of other logos, e.g., sponsorship or partnership listings
For select purposes, the UND Flame Logo may be used alone as the prominent graphic identifier for the University. Typically, the UND Flame Logo is used alone when:
- Space is limited, e.g., apparel, promotional items
- Internal audiences know that UND represents the University of North Dakota, e.g., campus signage, flyer for current students
However, because it cannot be assumed that all external audiences know the UND Flame Logo represents the University of North Dakota, the Primary UND Logotype should be used whenever possible on all advertising, collateral materials, publications, and other external communications.
If it is not possible to use the Primary UND Logotype on advertising or other communications intended for external audiences, then the University Signature or the words "University of North Dakota" (in one of the preferred typefaces) should be included elsewhere in the design to properly identify the University.
The UND Flame Logo should not be combined with other logos or graphics without prior written approval from the UND Division of University & Public Affairs. Refer to Unique UND Logos for more information.
If the addition of a department or program name is necessary, designers should maintain an appropriate clear zone (at least 1 inch space or 50% of the height of the UND Flame Logo) so as not to appear as one composite logo.
This secondary variation is included for limited use by designers. Because the Primary UND Logotype is such a strong graphic identifier for the University, it should be used whenever possible.
Designers should use the University Signature only when the UND Flame Logo is used prominently elsewhere in the design.
When the UND Flame Logo is used prominently in the design, then the University Signature or the words "University of North Dakota" (in one of the preferred typefaces) also should be included to properly identify the University in all advertising, publications, and other external communications.
