Domain Names
This policy governs marketing URLs that are broadly published, either as part of a publicity campaign or through the day-to-day promotion of a unit. Marketing URLs come in the following variants:
- Sub-directory URLs
- For example:
UND.edu/tech-support.
Sub-directory URLs will be used for most purposes, and may be requested at any time. All UND webpage URLs will follow a sub-directory structure starting with UND.edu (for example: UND.edu/research, UND.edu/academics).
- Redirect URLs
- For example:
techsupport.UND.edu, which redirects toUND.edu/tech-support.
Redirect URLs are generally used for formal publicity campaigns or long-term promotion of a permanent campus entity. They have the advantage that the redirect may be updated to go to a new destination URL in the event of a changed address.
- Sub-domain URLs
- For example:
law.UND.edu.
Sub-domain URLs are reserved for major academic units. Currently that includes:
- aero.UND.edu — John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences
- arts-sciences.UND.edu — College of Arts & Sciences
- business.UND.edu — College of Business & Public Administration
- distance.UND.edu — Online & Distance Education
- education.UND.edu — College of Education & Human Development
- engineering.UND.edu — College of Engineering & Mines
- graduateschool.UND.edu — The Graduate School
- law.UND.edu — School of Law
- library.UND.edu — Chester Fritz Library
- med.UND.edu — School of Medicine & Health Sciences
- nursing.UND.edu — College of Nursing
Exceptions allowing sub-domains for other purposes may be granted on grounds such as:
- External resource or a campus resource
- Quantity of use / traffic
- National standard for similar entities
- Technical ramifications of the sub-directory vs sub-domain
- Other considerations as they arise
Pre-existing sub-domains will continue to work; however, they may not be used in marketing unless specific permission is granted.
Individuals responsible for pre-existing sub-domains will ensure that they resolve to the proper, new pages and do not redirect through old servers.
Sub-sub-domains will be avoided at all costs. Exceptions only include third party sites running on non-UND servers.
