If you’re looking for a blended career that encompasses both science and personal interaction, explore pre-medicine at UND to help begin your journey into the medical field. While pre-medicine is not an undergraduate major, it's the recommended preparation for medical school, and will help you get the solid scientific knowledge base that you need to succeed as a doctor, surgeon or other medical professional.
Combine any undergraduate major with the pre-medicine curriculum for an education that will make you an excellent candidate for medical school. Whether you major in a foreign language, science, liberal arts, or another field, you'll gain the skills and knowledge you need to be successful. You'll work with an advisor from UND's College of Arts & Sciences to develop a plan of study that prepares you for medical school. Some required prerequisite classes for medical school applicants are:
- Organic Chemistry
- English Composition
- College Algebra
- Calculus/ Statistics
With plenty of opportunities for academic and professional development — both on and off campus — you’ll have no problem finding activities and organizations to enhance your learning and meet new people.
Internships — Medical schools require that you have first-hand exposure to the profession by volunteering or a part-time job in a healthcare setting. UND’s School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS) has many resources for students looking for experiential learning opportunities or internships.
Clubs and Organizations — The Undergraduate Medical Association (UMA) is active on UND’s campus for undergraduate students interested in a career in the medical field. UMA also co-sponsors the UND SMHS Pre-Med Day, where high school and undergraduate students can experience and familiarize themselves with the profession and the schooling required.
Physicians and surgeons are in high demand, with an increased growth rate projected for the future. In addition, wages for physicians and surgeons are among the highest of all occupations.
