COMMENT - 06/09/11: Recently, a student contacted us asking why the new UND Android app asks for permissions from the end user. Certain permissions are required in order for apps to function in the way they were designed. Below is an explanation of the permissions required and their use.
- Network Communication ("Full Internet access") - Necessary to talk to your school.
- Phone Calls ("Read phone state and identity") - We only need this to get the deviceid. Unfortunately, the permission is not very granular and it also gives us access to more information about phone calls. We do not use/store this information for anything.
- Storage ("Modify/delete SD card contents") - Used for downloading files (mainly for Mobile Learn inside Mobile Central).
- Your accounts ("Act as an account authenticator, manage the accounts list") - on 2.1+, allows us to use the account manager feature to save user/pass instead of our own encryption/storage format.
In developing UND mobile, it is the University's aim to improve the quality of life for our students, not monitor or control. App users' security is our top priority. The technology behind UND mobile is developed by Blackboard, and their and UND's mobile development teams are continually looking for ways to "minimize" any invasive nature of our mobile apps, and improve the app offerings.
