UND alumna inspires middle school and high school youth
Malvika Matharoo graduated from the University of North Dakota Aviation Management program in 2007. She is also a licensed commercial pilot and certified flight instructor.
Today her job is about inspiring. Born in India, and raised in Oman, she uses her experience as a woman and a pilot to help youth realize that they can pursue their dreams.
She is a part of Challenge Day, a California-based company that hosts experiential workshops at public schools all over the country and abroad to inspire understanding and celebration of diversity, truth, and expression.
"We lead workshops at middle and high schools all over the country and provide students with tools for healthy self-expression and to help them pursue their dreams and goals, as well as address issues such as bullying, stereotyping, rumor spreading, violence, and oppression," said Matharoo.
Matharoo came to UND as an art major hoping to become a computer animator.
"But I soon discovered that it wasn't for me," she said
Instead she took the advice of a friend who insisted she try flying.
Matharoo had found what she wanted, but her journey was turbulent.
"As an Indian woman breaking down old patterns and traditions, it was a challenge for me to pursue flying as a career," she said. "I faced a lot of skepticism. However I chose to keep moving forward towards my goal."
Matharoo graduated with a degree in aviation management but she took her aviation experience to another level.
"Today I draw upon my unique experiences and journey to motivate youth all over the country to follow their dreams," Matharoo said.
