The Associate Vice President for Research and Economic Development reviews all grant proposals and contracts submitted to external agencies, and if they meet with University policies, signs for the University. In signing, he attests to University compliance with a myriad of assurances required by funding agencies. He interacts extensively with faculty, especially those involved in research and the submission of grant proposals to external funding agencies, and assists faculty in linking research interests across departmental lines and organizational boundaries. He works with Grants and Contracts Administration (GCA) to negotiate terms and conditions of contracts, grants, and cooperative agreements, particularly as they relate to intellectual properties, copyrights, patents, and publication of research findings. He also awards grants to faculty/staff for various needs relating to research and creative activity.
The Associate Vice President gives presentations on the activities and services of RD&C; presents workshops concerning grantmanship related issues; and serves on many University committees; e.g., Senate Scholarly Activities (SSAC), Senate Conflict of Interest/Scientific Misconduct, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety (IBC), Radiation Safety, Associate Deans for Research, etc. Additional responsibilities include supervising the RD&C staff and managing the department.
Julie is secretary to the Associate Vice President, Senate Scholarly Activities Committee, Senate Conflict of Interest/Scientific Misconduct Committee, and Associate Deans for Research Committee. Contact her regarding an appointment with the Associate Vice President. She can also provide information on, or application forms for, the Senate Scholarly Activities Committee (SSAC). Julie administers the SSAC, Faculty Research Seed Money, and RD&C grant funds (Funds 21422, 21418, and 21410); contact her with questions regarding awards on those funds or for approval of vouchers, etc.
Proposal Processing Assistant
Jen is responsible for maintaining the external proposal and award database. Jen is the primary contact for electronic proposal submission and for the Community of Science (COS). She can also provide information on the proposal submission process, required assurances and certifications, proposal application forms, and funding opportunities.

Institutional Review Board (IRB) Coordinator
Michelle's many responsibilities include coordinating the activities of the IRB, assisting the Board in updating IRB policies and procedures and developing educational opportunities for IRB members, students and investigators at UND, as well as ensuring that research at UND using human subjects is conducted ethically and responsibly. She is responsible for outreach activities, ensuring that UND faculty, staff, and students are aware of their obligations regarding research using human subjects. Michelle is also responsible for coordinating the activities of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). If you have questions concerning the educational requirements, would like her to make a presentation in your department or class, or would like assistance in completing your proposal to the IRB, please contact Michelle.
Institutional Review Board (IRB) Administrative Secretary
As the Administrative Secretary for the IRB, Janet supports the IRB Coordinator and the IRB by preparing and distributing IRB correspondence, minutes, reports, etc.; receiving IRB proposals and forwarding them to the appropriate reviewers; and by maintaining the IRB database. Janet also supports the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
