History
UND's first Denim Day was May 25, 1994. A six-member charity selection committee made up of staff representatives was appointed by the President to manage and oversee this endeavor. Volunteer site coordinators across campus collected donations.
In February 2010, in order to increase its visibility and support across campus, and to oversee the general operations of the committee, President Robert O. Kelley requested that the Denim Day Committee become a standing committee of Staff Senate.
Mission
The mission of the Denim Day Committee is to engage UND employees in community involvement by giving financial support to local non-profit organizations that provide services to our community, while allowing UND employees to dress casually on designated days.
Operation
Denim Days support local non-profit charities/organizations. Local is defined as Grand Forks and immediate area surrounding our main UND campus. Denim Days are held twice a month. In October, notices are placed in the Grand Forks Herald City Brief and the U-Letter announcing that Denim Day applications are available for the upcoming year. In December, applications are reviewed by the Denim Day Committee and the committee determines who will be the recipients of donations for the upcoming year. Depending on the number of applications received, some applicants may not receive funding. Priority is given to those organizations that provide basic needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing. Funds are collected during the course of the year and are disbursed twice a year.
Participation in Denim Day is voluntary. The cost to participate is $1 for each regular Denim Day. Volunteer site coordinators collect money from their areas/buildings and turn those donations in to the Chair of the Denim Day Committee. One-hundred percent of collected funds are donated to the designated charities.
Your dollar goes a long way; here are a few that you have helped...Thank You!
*Since the UND community represents a wide variety of beliefs and convictions, we cannot entertain requests from political, religious, or reproductive rights organizations.
Special Denim Days
Besides the regular Denim Days, there are special Denim Days which are held throughout the year. Non-profit organizations may apply for a special Denim Day in conjunction with a yearly fund-raising event. One-hundred percent of the donations collected on that one day are given to that one organization. These organizations are generally national organizations that would not qualify for UND's regular Denim Days, which support local agencies.
