Dress casual, be comfortable, and support local charities!
This year, a proposal was brought forth to Staff Senate with the idea of merging Denim Days with Spirit Days. The Community Relations committee of Staff Senate voted to approve the merger resulting in Denim Days changing to Denim Spirit Days and are designating every Friday as Denim Spirit Day, with the first Friday of every month set up for a Special Denim Day. Staff Senate’s mission for Denim Spirit Days is to give everyone the opportunity to donate $1.00 or more each week to show compassion for non-profit organizations in the Greater Grand Forks community. We encourage the whole campus to wear DENIM and/or SPIRIT colors of green, pink or other UND gear on Fridays in support of OneUND.
If you participate in Denim Spirit Days, we ask that you pay $1.00 towards a worthy area nonprofit organization that can use the support. Your $1.00 may be given to your denim day site coordinator or may be deducted from each paycheck if there is enough interest. More information about payroll deduction will be coming out soon.
Thank you to all Denim Day supporters! Your dollar goes a long way; here are a few that you have helped...Thank You!
A special thank you goes out to the 56 Denim Day Site Coordinators across campus. It could not be done with out you.
In keeping with UND's Exceptional-UND strategic vision, UND Staff Senate Denim Days will incorporate two strategic priorities: Facilitate Collaboration and Enhance Quality of Life .
UND Staff Senate, in conjunction with UND Work Well, encourages you to wear tennis shoes on Denim Days and take walks on your breaks for YOUR health and wellness while your donations provide health and wellness to members of our community! Enjoy both indoor and outdoor walking trails on campus.
Note: While we support and encourage wearing tennis shoes on Denim Days, and to take a walk during breaks, the deans, department heads, and administrators determine what degree of casual dress is appropriate within their unit.
2017 Supported Local Charities
2017 Regular Denim Day donations support these 12 local charities:
- Circle of Friends Humane Society
- Community Violence Intervention Center – Light of Hope program
- Grand Forks Senior Center – Meals on Wheels program
- Lutheran Social Services – Healthy Families program
- North Dakota Association for the Disabled (NDAD)
- Northlands Rescue Mission
- Prairie Harvest
- Red River Valley Habitat for Humanity
- St. Joseph’s Social Care and Thrift Store – Food Pantry
- Third Street Clinic
- Valley Health
2017 Special Denim SpiritDays
In addition to regular Denim Days, there are special Denim Days held throughout the year. Non-profit organizations may apply for a special Denim Day in conjunction with a yearly fund-raising event. One-hundred percent of the donations collected on that one day are given to that one organization. These organizations are generally national organizations that would not qualify for UND's regular Denim Days, which support local agencies.
Special Denim Spirit Days will occur on the first Friday of each month.

Historically, Denim Days around the world originally started as a way to bring awareness to sexual assault and then was adopted locally to bring awareness and raise funds for other charities. On March 23, 1994 UND members of Council of State Employees (COSE) held an open forum in the Memorial Union to discuss the possibility of UND adopting a jeans day to support local non-profit charities. In May 1994 a proposal was submitted by representatives of COSE to the President’s Cabinet requesting the establishment of a UND Denim Day. This proposal followed similar guidelines as “Jeans Day in North Dakota” implemented by the Bismarck Tribune.
This proposal was accepted and UND’s first Denim Day was May 25, 1994. A six-member charity selection committee made up of staff representatives was appointed by the President to manage and oversee this endeavor. In February 2010, in order to increase its visibility and support across campus, and to oversee the general operations of the committee, President Robert O. Kelley requested that the Denim Day Committee become a standing committee of Staff Senate.
Policy and Application
Denim Days support local non-profit charities/organizations. Local is defined as Grand Forks and immediate area surrounding our main UND campus. Denim Days are held twice a month. In October, notices are placed in the Grand Forks Herald City Brief and the U-Letter announcing that Denim Day applications are available for the upcoming year. In December, applications are reviewed by the Denim Day Committee and the committee determines who will be the recipients of donations for the upcoming year. Depending on the number of applications received, some applicants may not receive funding. Priority is given to those organizations that provide basic needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing. Funds are collected during the course of the year and are disbursed twice a year.
*Since the UND community represents a wide variety of beliefs and convictions, we cannot entertain requests from political, religious, or reproductive rights organizations.
