Logo of the University of North Dakota
The UND logo is a contemporary graphic device intended to represent the University of North
Dakota and to unify its presentation in the visual media. The current logo is a modification of
the "Centennial logo," which was adopted in 1980 for use with various materials celebrating the 100th anniversary of the University. The "Centennial logo" was selected through a national design competition. It was created by Daniel Bowens of Rolling Meadows, Ill., who was at that time a senior majoring in visual communication at Northern Illinois University. The contest was judged by Russell Mroczek, a faculty member at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
The current UND logo has been in use since the close of Centennial year activities in 1984.
Specific standards approved by the Office of the President regulate the appearance of official
stationery used by the University and its offices and departments.
The UND logo, the University Seal and the Fighting Sioux logo are protected by copyright, and
their use on commercial products is strictly controlled. More information about the copyright
protection is available by contacting the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Operations.
The University also has established regulations for the use of UND's name and logo on University publications and web sites. For more details, go to http://www.und.edu/dept/our/visual.html®
