Campus Life and Safety Team
The Campus Life and Safety Team (CLAST) assists students who may be struggling academically or personally by coordinating resources and assistance on their behalf.
Responsibilities of CLAST
- Review information provided by the Dean of Students Office (DOS), University Police (UPD),Housing and others regarding concerning student behavior.
- Assess the information provided to determine the most effective response.
- Determine a plan of action based on the response needed and identify responsible individuals to complete the plan.
- Implement the plan and communicate with other CLAST members as previously identified and as appropriate.
- Identify if and how follow-up or monitoring of the situation will occur.
- Review and assess institutional policies and procedures and recommend changes to support student success as appropriate.
- Meet weekly to ensure student issues are addressed in a timely manner and to provide opportunities for team building among CLAST members.
- Engage in ongoing training to promote a greater understanding of current issues and trends related to risk management and safety.
Reviewing a Concern
When CLAST is made aware of a concern involving a student, the following questions will be considered in developing an appropriate plan of action

- What is the behavior?
- Where is the behavior occurring?
- How does the behavior affect the community?
- Is the identified student in imminent danger or an imminent danger to the community?
- Are there any past documented incidents/behaviors?
- What do we know of the student's academic performance or mental health history?
- Is there a documented disability?
- What are the ethical/legal issues?
- What systems need to be involved in finding more information or responding (Dunkle,
- Silverstein, & Warner, 2008)?
Possible campus responses include but are not limited to the following
(Balancing Safety and Support on Campus: A Guide for Campus Teams, 2012, p. 17).
- Monitor the situation
- Engage directly with the person to de-escalate
- Work with a trusted peer or ally to monitor more closely
- Work with other departments to coordinate a plan of action (e.g., assessment, counseling, case management, disciplinary action)
- Voluntary referral for mental health assessment or treatment
- Mandated psychological assessment
- Involuntary hospitalization for evaluation and/or treatment
- Disciplinary review/action
- Notify family member(s)
- Convene a CLAST sub-team
- Separate the student from the institution (Emergency suspension, voluntary leave)
A CLAST sub-team may be convened at the discretion of the Chair to address issues that may be a risk or threat to a student or the community.
Reporting an Incident to CLAST
If you are concerned about a student, please contact the Dean of Students at 701.777.2664.
If a student's behavior leaves you feeling frightened and in fear for your personal safety or the safety of others, please contact University Police Department 701.777.3491. The University Police Department works closely with the members of CLAST and will consult with offices as needed. While it can be scary to contact the University Police Department in this kind of situation, it is the best call you can make for the safety and security of all involved.
