Academic Advising Agreement
Academic advising is one of the most important services provided while you are here at UND. The process of academic advising is a two-way interaction where you (the student) and I (the advisor) work together to achieve a common goal - your successful transition to and graduation from UND. This advising agreement outlines what you can expect from your advisor and what will be expected of you from your advisor to ensure positive progression toward your goals.
Student Responsibilities
- Ask questions - about anything! In order to handle the responsibilities of college life, you need to know the answers.
- Make appointments to see your advisor. Dropping in does not always allow for quality attention.
- Learn the university policies and procedures and how to fill out the appropriate paperwork.
- Do preliminary planning, career goal setting, and course selection prior to the advisor appointment.
- Visit the Career Walk-in Center, McCannel Hall room 280, to explore career goals and options.
- Make final course selection and course scheduling each semester after having questions answered by an advisor.
- Read all correspondence from the University. Letters and e-mail contain important information about deadlines, registration procedures, etc.
- Understand that the ultimate responsibility for choosing classes, dropping classes, meeting curriculum requirements, and meeting with an advisor is yours.
Advisor Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a caring and open attitude.
- Be available on a walk-in or appointment basis.
- Answer questions regarding General Education/Essential Studies Requirements.
- Be knowledgeable about university resources and be able to make referrals - Student Success Center, Career Walk-in Center, Disability Services for Students, Writing Center, etc.
- Be knowledgeable and understand 100 and 200 level courses to be able to answer questions about them.
- Understand the campus policies and procedures that affect students and be able to communicate the information to students - effects of repeat courses, probation status, grade point average, etc.
- Keep accurate student records and maintain confidentiality.
