Objective
In addition to the Cover Letter, your objective gives a voice to your resume. A good objective provides the recruiter/hiring manager a summary of what position you are interested in, what you have to offer and how it will benefit them.
Generic
To obtain a position utilizing skills gained through education and experience
Recruiter Viewpoint: What position does this applicant want? Will any position work as long as it’s using their education and experience? Do I need to do the work of the applicant to determine which position they qualify for and want without fully knowing what skills they have gained? Maybe the skills are in the experience or something?
Tailored
Career-focusedindividual with a desire to utilize my degree in Marketing along with my proven interpersonal, time management, and customer services skills to contribute to the continued success of Company XYZ.
Recruiter Viewpoint: Yes! This individual took the time to read our job posting and recognizes the skills (interpersonal, time management, and customer service skills) we singled out as key in our busy marketing department. They have taken an interest in what I am looking for so let’s see where they have gained these skills throughout their career (in Experience section) and see if their past performance will indicate future success in our position/company.
