Computer Setup
Setting up your computer for the residence halls
1. You will need to activate your NDUS User Account and sign into Impulse Safe-Connect.
2. Install the Safe-Connect policy key when prompted.
3. Set your Windows Updates to Automatic, then proceed to Microsoft Windows Update, and download all the high-priority updates.
4. Once connected to our network you will be redirected to download an Anti-Virus if you don't already have one installed. An anti-virus is required to use our network.
5. After these steps you will have full network connectivity.
Note: Students are NOT allowed wireless access points in their rooms; please use the wireless provided.
Setting up your switch in Walsh or Bek
Please refer to this flyer to see the correct way to connect your computer and equipment to the switch provided in your room. Connecting incorrectly may cause network problems in your room or in your hall.
Setting up your computer for Campus Apartments
1. You will need to activate your NDUS User Account and sign into Impulse Safe-Connect.
2. Install the Safe-Connect policy key when prompted.
3. You will need to follow our DSL signup and download either the Zoom ADSL Instructions or Wireless Zoom ADSL Instructions. Please note that routers cannot be used and DSL modems must be setup as a bridge (see instructions).
4. Set your Windows Updates to Automatic, then proceed to Microsoft Windows Update, and download all the high-priority updates.
5. Once connected to our network you will be redirected to download an anti-virus if you don't already have one installed. An anti-virus is required to use our network.
6. After these steps you will have full network connectivity.
Setting up your computer off campus
1. You will need to activate your NDUS User Account.
2. Set Windows Updates to Automatic, then proceed to Microsoft Windows Update, and download all the high-priority updates.
3. Once on campus and connected to our network, you will be prompted to sign into Impulse SafeConnect and install the policy key.
4. Additionally, you will be redirected to download an anti-virus if you don't already have one installed. An anti-virus is required to use our network.
5. After these steps you will have full network connectivity.
Setting up your Mac
1. You will need to activate your NDUS User Account and sign into Impulse Safe-Connect.
2. Install the Safe-Connect policy key when prompted.
3. Proceed to Software Update and install all the latest updates.
4. Please install your choice of anti-virus software. Note: While Macs are not required to run anti-virus software for network connectivity, it is recommended.
5. After these steps you will have full network connectivity.
Setting up your network card for Windows Vista / Windows 7
If the network card is of a newer model, Windows Vista should automatically detect it and install the proper drivers, possible prompting for the driver disk included with the network card. If the network card is not automatically detected by Windows Vista, then the setup procedure provided in the network card's documentation should be followed, before continuing.
Once the network card is properly installed, click on Start -> Control Panel.
Click on “Network and Internet” or if you’re in classic view click on “Network and Sharing Center”.
click on “Network and Sharing Center”.
Windows Vista users click on “Manage Network Connections”.
Windows 7 users click on “Change Adapter Settings”.
From here, you’ll see an icon labeled Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection, depending on whether you’re using a cable connection or wireless respectively. Right click on this icon and select properties.
This new screen allows you to configure the protocols and clients your computer will use to "talk" on the network.
If you find you are missing TCP/IP or any other client or protocol you wish to utilize, simply click on the install button located on this screen, and choose the appropriate client or protocol you wish to use from the list Windows presents you with.
UND uses DHCP for their IP addressing. An IP address is used by your computer in order to get online. An IP address is like a street address for your computer, only this is the address used on the Internet. Because UND uses DHCP for assigning IP addresses, configuring your TCP/IP protocol for the UND network is extremely easy.
To configure your TCP/IP protocol for the UND network, select “Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPV4) and click “Properties”.
Set IP address, and DNS to Obtain automatically.
Once you have made all these changes, close all the windows by hitting "OK" at the bottom of each of them, saving all the changes. You may need to reboot your computer before these changes will take effect.
