What is the U Card? The U Card is your official University of North Dakota identification card. This card is your ticket for accessing services at a variety of locations offered throughout campus. On it is your name, photo, and library bar code. This valuable ID card can also be used as a pre-paid debit card. You deposit money into your account in advance and the balance decreases as you use it.
What identification do I need to bring to get a U Card? Faculty, staff and students need to go to the U Card Office located in the lower level of the Memorial Union(room 3). Please bring a form of photo identification with you. Acceptable forms of ID include: driver's license, government issued ID card, or passport. Your picture will be taken immediately and your ID will be made while you wait. If faculty and staff members stop by the ID Office before they have received their initial paycheck, they should bring verification of employment (letter from employer) with them to the U Card Office. Employees need an EMPL # before receiving an ID. Incoming students will have the opportunity to receive their U Card during the Orientation Summer Registration Program. Transfer students or students who did not attend the Orientation Program may stop by the U Card Office during regular business hours.
Who is eligible for a U Card? All current University of North Dakota registered students, faculty, and staff are eligible to receive the U Card.
Where can I use my U Card? Your ID card can be used at any campus service requiring identification. In addition, your ID card allows you to access services at the following places:
- The University of North Dakota Bookstore
- UND Dining Centers and Convenience Stores
- Athletic Events (students only)
- Chester Fritz Library
- UND Food Court - Old Main Marketplace
- ValuePorts - 5 convenient locations: Gamble Hall, Odegard Hall, Memorial Union (lower level), Wilkerson Hall, Walsh Hall.
- Selected residence hall laundry machines (Selke, Brannon, Noren, West, McVey, Smith, Squires, Johnstone/Fulton Halls, and Hancock Hall (coming soon)
- Homecoming Voting
- Student Elections
- UND Airport
- Door Access
Can anyone else use my U Card? No. Your U Card is non-transferrable. Only YOU can use your card. In the event the card is transferred to another user other than the original cardholder, the card will be confiscated by a University official.
What happens if my U Card is lost, stolen, or damaged? If your U Card is lost or stolen, you must notify the U Card Office at (701) 777-2071. You are responsible for all transactions made to your account until you have notified us. You may notify us online at ManageMyID. This is your network link to managing your U Card online. This feature allows all University students, faculty and staff to view U Card account balances, spending history and report your card lost. This is a 24-hour service that will provide increased security for all your online accounts associated with the card. Once reported, our computer system will reject any transactions attempted by your account number. For students who need access to Dining Centers, you will receive a temporary pass to use until you have either found your card, or a replacement card has been issued. These temporary passes will be issued at the Dining Centers for a fee of $5.00. There are no temporary passes for the library, athletic events, or accessing funds from your U Card Debit Account. If your card is physically damaged in any way, you will be required to purchase a new card.
How do I get a replacement U Card? Stop by the U Card Office, fill out an ID Card Agreement, pay a $15 replacement fee, and receive a new card.
What do I do if I find my lost U Card? If you have not replaced your U Card, you may reactivate your card by stopping by the U Card Office. This will assure the security of your account. If you have already purchased a replacement card, your old card will no longer be valid.
How can I open a U Card Debit Account? To activate your U Card Debit Account, you must fill out an Account Agreement and place a minimum of $25 in your account at the U Card Office.
How do I add money to my U Card Debit Account? There are four easy ways to deposit money into your Debit Account:

- Stop by any ValuePort machine around campus. There are five convenient locations – Gamble Hall, Odegard Hall, Memorial Union (lower lever), Wilkerson Hall, and Walsh Hall. This machine is similar to an ATM, however, you deposit cash into the machine and the funds are immediately available in your debit account.
How can I use my U Card Debit Account? Simply notify the cashier that you wish to use your Debit Account and present your U Card. The U Card Debit Account decreases with each purchase.
Is my U Card Debit Account refundable at any time? No. The U Card Debit Account stays open until you graduate from college or terminate employment. If you leave the University, either through graduation, withdrawal, or termination of employment, you may request a refund of your U Card Debit Account. To request this refund, you must complete the Request for Refund Form. Upon verification of graduation, withdrawal, or termination of employment, the remaining amount will be credited to your University Account through Student Account Services (Business Office). Any money left in your individual Debit Account will revert to the University U Card Office two (2) years after becoming inactive.
What is the Valueport? Valueport is a machine which accepts cash that is credited to your debit
account immediately. Cash of $1, $5, $10, or $20 will be accepted. The machine does not accept credit cards. Valueport is located at 5 convenient locations- Gamble Hall, Odegard Hall, Memorial Union (lower level), Wilkerson Hall, Walsh Hall.
