Server Decommissioning Project
The Need for Action
A majority of UND websites are now hosted on OmniUpdate (OU), the campus-supported content management system. However, several hundred UND websites still exist on old server technology that is not reliable or maintainable, and cannot be supported moving forward. As such, the old server technology will be decommissioned on June 30, 2014. Websites remaining on this platform after that date will be frozen, meaning they will remain viewable from the Internet, but will no longer be accessible for modifications. Please be aware that sites remaining on the server after that date will no longer be supported.
Server Decommissioning Protocol
The following steps will help you through the server decommissioning process:
Step 1: Claim Your Website
Go to http://bit.ly/IdvuxZ before February 1, 2013 to review the list of websites on the server and identify the sites you own.
Step 2: Take Action
Determine which course of action should be taken for each website you own and forward the website URL (Web address), along with your name, phone number, email, and course of action to Tera Buckley.
The courses of action include
- Shut down – The website is not needed because it is no longer valid, or the site has already moved to OmniUpdate and is redirecting to the new site. No further action is required.
- Redirect – The website moved to a different location and traffic needs to be redirected to a new website and the site on the old server needs to be shut down. Provide the URL (Web address) of the new website and no further action is required.
- Review – Websites with applications and databases may receive special consideration and should be reviewed by the UND Web Team before a course of action is determined. You will be contacted and offered direction if this action is selected.
- Migrate – The website needs to be moved off the old server to a new server.
All websites will be migrated in accordance to UND's interim Web policy. Carefully review the policy to make sure you understand the parameters and choose one of the two migration paths.
Request New Web Space
Web space will be set-up on a priority basis in the following order
- Academic units
- Administrative units
- Faculty (individual)
- External entity
Complete a Web Policy Exemption Form
We understand there are special circumstances when it may not be appropriate for you to use UND's content management system. Any unit or individual seeking a complete exemption must provide a content management plan by completing the Submit a Request form.
Step 3: Register for an OmniUpdate Training Course
Migrating content to OmniUpdate is the responsibility of the content owner. Everyone with access to your website should complete the training course offered through Learning & Development.
Step 4: Request a Consultation Meeting
After OU training is completed through Learning & Development, a one-on-one consultation meeting can be schedule with a member of the UND Web Team to review your site structure and help you set up your new site. Email Tera Buckley, Interim Web Strategy Director, to schedule a consultation.
