Crafting an Effective Elevator Speech
The elevator speech is a 30-second speech that effectively describes a person, business or idea.
It is called the elevator speech because a ride in an elevator takes about 30 seconds. The speech is meant to persuade and convince someone in half a minute. In addition, the speech should make the listener feel more comfortable and at ease about your speech topic.
- Career Fair: Introducing yourself to the employer.
- In an interview: for the question “Tell us about yourself.”
- Professional, social, or organizational meetings when you are asked to introduce yourself.
- When cold calling for future positions.
What to Include
- Introduce yourself
- State what your goal is, relevant to the person you are talking to. Are you looking for a job or internship?
- Talk about your skills relevant to the position they are looking for.
- Follow that with an accomplishment that proves you have that skill. Use classroom project examples, past internship experiences, or relevant work experiences.
- Let the employer know how you can immediately benefit the company (do your research ahead of time and say something about the company you would have learned from that research!).
- End with something unique about yourself. What are you involved in? What drives you? (e.g. for fun I enjoy running marathons. My passion is helping kids as a coach for the Special Olympics, etc.) It makes you more interesting and memorable from everyone else.
