LLC Room Assignments
Students who have indicated interest in and have been verified as eligible for a learning community will be assigned a room during this time. Students who did not indicate interest in a learning community or do not receive a room assignment during this process will participate in New Student Room Selection. Students wanting to be included in the LLC Room Assignment Process must have indicated their preference on their housing application prior to May 1.
Students who are eligible and have been pre-selected to live in a Living Learning Community (LLC) will be assigned to a room.
- Assignments for each LLC will be made according to date housing application was received.
- Students may only be assigned to a LLC if they meet the eligibility for the LLC and have indicated interest in living on the LLC.
- Matched roommate groups will be assigned together only if all members of the matched roommate group meet the criteria for the LLC.
- Groups in which all students do not meet the LLC criteria will not be assigned as part of the LLC Room Assignment Process and will select a room during the Room Selection Process.
- Not all students that request a LLC will receive an assignment on an LLC as demand in some communities is greater that the capacity.
- Students who receive an assignment in the LLC Room Assignment Process will not participate in the Room Selection Process, but will have the opportunity to change rooms in the Room Change Processes.
Room Selection Start Times
Students will receive an email with their start time. Start times will also be available to view in Housing Self Service.
Room Selections
All students who have completed their housing application, signed their Residence Hall Room & Meal Plan License Agreement, and confirmed their enrollment to UND prior to May 1 will have the opportunity to participate in the room selection process. Any student included in this process that does not select a room will be automatically assigned a room prior to June 15. Students will be able to view their room assignments in Housing Self Service.
The majority of new students will participate in the Room Selection Process, where they will be able to select from all available rooms at their room selection start time. Here's what you need to know:
- Review the room selection process instructions prior to your selection time.
- Participating students will receive a start date and time based on when their housing application was submitted. The earlier your application was submitted the earlier your room selection start time.
- Start times will be spaced 1 minute apart. Students are encouraged to select a room as soon as they are able in order to maximize the room choices available. Once a student’s start time has passed, the student may select a room at any time before the end of Room Selection.
- Room Selection start times will be emailed to the student's UND email and will also be available in Housing Self Service. Please visit Housing Self Service in advance of your start time so you may troubleshoot any access problems.
- Students selecting a room will only see open rooms for which they are eligible.
- Students in a roommate group will only see rooms that can accommodate the size of the roommate group. If no rooms are available, try removing members from the roommate group and search again.
- Students who have matched with a roommate group will be able to select room(s) for everyone in the roommate group.
- Students who have not chosen a roommate group will select from available open bed spaces. Students will have to select a space that may already have someone assigned to the room.
- Once a selection has been made, no changes or other selections can be made. Students will have the opportunity to look for a different room in the Room Change Process.
Select Your Room
All students who completed the housing application or confirmed their enrollment to UND between May 2, 2021 and May 31, 2021 will have the opportunity to select rooms at designated times. Students will receive an email with their room selection start time.
Room Assigned
Students who complete an application after June 1, 2021 will be given a housing assignment. Beginning June 15, assignments will be made weekly by the Housing Office. Students will then be eligible to participate in the Room Change Processes.
Make Room Changes
Students who have received a room assignment will be able to use the Room Change Process to look for other available rooms.
All students with a room assignment will be able to participate in the Room Change Process.
- Students will be able to select from any open spaces.
- Students may only select a space for themselves.
- Any roommates that want to move will need to make their own room selection.
- Room changes can be made multiple times during the room change process.
- Students are encouraged to check back if a specific space they are looking for is not currently available. Additional spaces may open up throughout the summer as students make changes or no longer plan to attend UND.
Choose Your Dining Plan
Prior to June 30 you can select your own dining plan in the Housing Self Service. If you need to change your dining plan after June 30 you will need to contact the Housing Office at housing@UND.edu.
Room Selection Process
To select your room, please follow the new student room selection process.
Select Your Roommates
To select a room with a roommate, each person must join a roommate group. Only students who have completed the Residence Hall Application for the upcoming academic year may be selected as part of a roommate group.
- A maximum of 4 people can be in each roommate group.
- Roommate selections must be made prior to room selection.
- Your roommate group is not complete until all roommate requests are matched. Only fully matched roommate groups can select a room.
- A student can be removed from a roommate group at any time.
- Once students are "matched" in a roommate group, the person with the best priority number chooses the room during Room Selection.
Selecting Your Roommate
- Log in to Housing Self Service.
- From the Room and Roommate Selection Menu select "Roommates/Suitemates."
- Select the term you wish to select a roommate for and click Submit.
- Under Roommate Search enter the full name or email address to search for the person you want to be in a roommate group with. If the person you are looking for is not found:
- Verify that person has completed the Residence Hall Application (Fall 2021).
- Make sure you have typed their name or UND email address correctly. Use student's full first name (ex: Christopher instead of Chris).
- Try to search for last name only.
Once you select your roommate, an email will be sent asking them to accept the request. Roommate requests can be verified in Housing Self Service.

Room Selection Frequently Asked Questions
Unable to Find a Match
Matching with a roommate is not required. If you have not found a roommate, you will assign yourself to a room during your allotted time. You will place yourself into an empty room or select a space in a room with another person who also did not have a roommate prior to room selection. Students who have an open space in their room after the completion of each Room Change Process, will be consolidated with other students in the same situation.
Suite and Community Style Halls
Suite style halls include Brannon, McVey, Noren, Selke, Squires, Walsh, and West Halls. Community style bathrooms are found in Bek, Hancock, Johnstone, and Smith. Swanson Hall has private bathrooms within each room. University Place is apartment style living with two bathrooms per apartment. Final decisions on which halls may be utilized for assignment for Fall 2021 - Spring 2022 will be announced closer to Room Selection.
Room Choice Preferences
The most likely reason for not seeing any rooms in the hall you are looking for is that they have already been claimed for assignment. However, if you are in a roommate group it may mean that there are not any open spaces for the size of your group. You can try removing members from your roommate group and then try searching for a room again.
Matching with Roommate Group
If your roommate group is not fully matched, you will not be able to select a room. If you would like to select a room, you will want to remove any roommates from your group that have not matched or contact them to log in and accept your request. After completing one of these you will then be able to select a room.
Signing Up for Single Room
There are a limited number of single rooms available. Single rooms will not be available for room selection. Students interested in a single room should pick a room space during room selection and then place themselves on the single room waiting list by completing the Single Room Request Form (Fall 2021) in Housing Self Service. Single rooms will be assigned as they become available. It is not guaranteed that students who complete the request form will be assigned a single room.
Two types of single rooms may be available for 2021 – 2022. Designed single rooms are specific rooms throughout select buildings that are designed to accommodate one individual. Typically, the square footage of the room is reduced and there is only one set of furniture per room.
A small number of designed double rooms will also be available for students to purchase as a room to themselves. In order to guarantee a roommate is not assigned, students will need to pay for both bed spaces in the room. These rooms will retain both sets of furniture.
On the Single Room Request Form (Fall 2021), students will be asked to indicate what type of single room they are willing to accept for the academic year.
