Culinary Corner
We communicate evidence-based nutrition and cooking principles in a fun and applicable way.
The Culinary Corner is a demonstration kitchen that provides free and fee-based cooking classes. Classes are led by student instructors, UND nutrition students, and guest chefs. The kitchen is located on the main level of the Wellness Center near the classrooms and quiet lounge in the Wellness Wing of the facility.
Why Nutrition Matters
Food is fundamental to life. It fuels our energy, supports focus, and helps our bodies grow and function at their best. What we put into our bodies matters, and every meal is an opportunity to support overall health and well-being.
Understanding macronutrients, what they are, how we consume them, and how they support the body can help you make more informed and balanced food choices.
Understanding Macronutrients
Macronutrients are nutrients the body needs in larger amounts to function properly. They provide energy and support essential body processes.
Proteins are the building blocks of the body. Made up of amino acids, proteins play a key role in:
- Growth & development
- Repairing & building cells
- Supporting the immune system
You’ll find protein in foods like lean meats, eggs, dairy, beans, lentils, tofu, and nuts.
Carbohydrates are the body’s primary source of energy.
Complex Carbohydrates
Provide longer-lasting energy
- Vegetables, whole grains, & beans.
Fiber-Rich Carbohydrates
Help support digestion, gut health, & weight management.
- Fruits with skin, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.
Choosing nutrient-dense carbs helps fuel your body and brain throughout the day.
Fats play an important role in overall health. They help the body absorb essential vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and support hormone function and cholesterol regulation.
Unsaturated Fats
Unsaturated fats are recommended most often and are typically found in plant-based foods such as nuts, seeds, avocados, and oils
Saturated fats
Saturated fats are most commonly found in animal-based foods such as butter, cheese, whole milk, and fatty cuts of meat.
Choosing healthier fat sources can support heart health and help your body function efficiently.
