Writing Across the Curriculum
The Writing Across the Curriculum program is a resource for faculty, departments, and programs teaching with writing. WAC provides professional development opportunities for faculty and consultation to departments and programs as they seek to achieve student learning outcomes in courses and in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Central to the WAC mission are the beliefs that writing is a tool for learning and that the ability to write in various contexts draws on multiple knowledge areas and develops through repeated practice over time.
The WAC program provides opportunities for departments to collaborate on:
- identifying writing-related learning outcomes
- assessing writing-related learning outcomes
- staging writing throughout the curriculum to build to final learning outcomes
- course development with a writing focus
The WAC program provides opportunities for faculty to develop their expertise in
- course development with a writing focus
- classroom practices for teaching with writing, such as
- assignment design
- responding to writing
- evaluating writing
Among activities sponsored by the WAC program are
- workshops and consultation for departments
- an annual course development workshop with a writing focus
- teaching-with-writing lunch seminars
- faculty writing groups
- faculty study seminars focused on teaching with writing
- one-on-one consultation with faculty
WAC is also the home of the Writing Center, a place for students, faculty, and staff to talk about their work in progress with a writing consultant.
