Embracing Diversity
Welcome to the UCC website to understanding diversity. Congratulations on pursuing an interest in learning more! Learning to understand differences is one way of relating to the changing world around you.
UND cares about attracting and retaining students from diverse backgrounds for many reasons, one of them is because of its importance to learning! What you learn now about diversity will give you skills that organizations want for competing in a changing world. It's not just about getting hired to do a job; it's about supporting the organization and people you will work with in an ever changing world!
Please check the following links for more information on the value of workplace diversity.
Did you know…. African Americans are no longer the largest minority group in the country? According to the 2000 Census Hispanics now make up 13 percent of the U.S. population. The census takes place every decade, so the next one will be in 2013, what do you think will be the ethnic/racial make-up of the U.S. in six years? Click here for more information on the 2000 US Census.
With an exposure to greater diversity, we become more able to see the world from the point of view of others. But even when familiar with English it can be difficult to think of expressions that are common in our everyday language. Click here for a new experience with the English language.
Learning about another culture leads to greater creativity and greater connections. You may find out you have more in common with other cultures than you thought! And the work of learning about other cultures doesn't just apply to other countries. There are other cultures all around you. Learning about other cultures both inside the U.S. and outside the U.S. can help your learn more about your own culture! Click here to see if you can pass a Naturalization Self Test?
Sept. 11, 2001: It changed the world. Now companies offer workshops on Islamic values. Did you know that the largest Muslim country is Indonesia, which is not an Arab country? And did you know that just because someone is from an Arab country they may not practice Islam. There are Christian Iraqis and Palestinians as well as Jewish Moroccans and Egyptians! Many multinational companies have locations outside the United States. What you know about other cultures and languages could be your boarding pass for moving up and moving out with multinational companies. Click here to learn more about Islam.
Here is your real learning challenge. Open yourself to experiences that take in the diversity all around you right here at UND.
