UND holds 2012 Scholarly Forum Feb. 27-28 at Memorial Union
The University of North Dakota Graduate School will hold the 2012 Scholarly Forum Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 27-28, at the Memorial Union.
This campus-wide event showcases the cutting-edge research and creative scholarship of the University's graduate students and faculty. It features 70 oral presentations, panel discussions and a poster session 2-4 p.m., Tuesday, in the ballroom.
Some of the featured presentations and panels include:
Space Studies Lab: Integrated Strategies for the Human Exploration of the Moon and Mars
Monday, 9:10 a.m., River Valley Room
Space Studies students are working on a variety of projects involving human space exploration. Graduate student Tim Holland will discuss the considerations for developing a comfortable and functional living area that can protect people from the environmental extremes of temperature, vacuum, remoteness, and ionizing radiation of the lunar surface.
Roundtable: Research Related To Human Culture and Intercultural Issues
Monday, 12 p.m., Red River Valley Room
Ph.D. student Yuliya Kartoshkina will host an interdisciplinary roundtable gathering to discuss this topic. All graduate students and faculty conducting research in this area of human culture are invited to explore various angles on this topic and network with other scholars.
Biology Session
Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. Lecture Bowl
Eleven graduate students from the UND Department of Biology will present research on such topics as: "Identifying Landscape-Level Patterns in Grassland Songbird Communities;" "Haemosporidian Parasites in Grassland Passerines of Northwest Minnesota;" "Wolffian Duct Stabilization in the Common Snapping Turtle, a Reptile With Temperature Dependent Sex Determination;" and " Rural Red River Valley Mosquito Ecology and Xenomonitoring."
Geology Panel: Geothermal Energy Basics
Tuesday, 1 p.m., Badlands Room
Geothermal energy from sedimentary basins is an important and under-utilized potential energy source. To properly evaluate a resource, a number of variables must be analyzed and understood, such as infrastructure needs, power generation needs, size and temperature of the resource, and local limitations (i.e., cooling sources for the working fluid of a binary power plant). Students from the UND Geothermal Laboratory will discuss these issues and answer questions on geothermal energy evaluation and production.
Parking:
Guests without University parking permits for this or any other on-camus event may use the "pay-as-you-go" option in the Parking Ramp (corner of Second Avenue North and Columbia Road), the the UND Visitor pay Lot (off Centennial Drive) or a Parking Meter.
