UND kicks-off weeklong series of musical events Tuesday with Brass Trio and ‘POPS’ concert
The University of North Dakota University Band and Faculty Brass Trio will present a "POPS" Concert on Tuesday, April 24, at 8 p.m., in the UND Memorial Union Ballroom. The event is the first in a series of UND-related musical events that will be taking place this week on an off campus.
Tickets for the Brass Trio and "POPS" concert are $6 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, or $12 per family, and available at the door. Military personnel are admitted free with ID. Pop and popcorn will be provided. The theme for this concert will be "American History & Patriotism."
The University Band, led by UND Director of Bands Dr. James Popejoy, will include E.E. Bagley's National Emblem, Fantasy on "Yankee Doodle" by Mark Williams, Lee Greenwood's popular God Bless the U.S.A., and An American Spectacular by Chris Sharp in their program. Dr. Royce Blackburn, head of the voice area at UND, will be the featured vocal soloist on John Philip Sousa's I've Made My Plans for the Summer, and Warren Barker's setting of From Sea to Shining Sea. UND student Kilee Sundt will direct Barket's From Sea to Shining Sea.
The Faculty Brass Trio includes Dr. Ronnie Ingle, trumpet; Kayla Nelson, horn; and Dr. Joel Pugh, trombone. Their portion of the program will include Scott Joplin's rag The Easy Winners, Summertime by George Gershwin, and John Philip Sousa's Washington Post. They will also perform James Sochinski's Concerto with the University Band.
The concert will conclude with a salute to the Armed Forces and our national march, Sousa's The Stars and Stripes Forever.
Chamber Orchestra
The Department of Music and Alejandro Drago will present a Chamber Orchestra Concert, titled "Child Prodigies: Mendelssohn and Mozart," at 8 p.m., Wednesday, in the Campbell Recital Hall of the Hughes Fine Arts Center on campus. Tickets are available at the door at the rates of $6 Adults, $3 Students & Senior Citizens or $12 Family Pass (2 Adults & 2 Students). Military personnel are admitted free with Military ID.
Wind Ensemble to perform
The UND Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. James Popejoy, will present a spring concert on Thursday, at 8 p.m. The performance will be held at the Chester Fritz Auditorium on the UND campus. Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, or $12 per family, and available at the door. Military personnel are admitted free with ID.
The UND Wind Ensemble will perform A Festival Prelude by Alfred Reed, Firefly by Ryan George, Roger Cichy's Bugs, and Frank Ticheli's exciting Angels in the Architecture. The ensemble will also premiere a new work by British composer Martin Ellerby entitled Soliloquy for Solferino. UND was part of the international consortium of 30 ensembles that commissioned this work, which was written to commemorate the founding of the Red Cross.
The UND Wind Ensemble recently learned they were selected to present a featured performance at the 2012 Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, Wash., this coming November.
Concert Choir
The Department of Music and Joshua Bronfman will present a concert featuring the UND Concert Choir at 8 p.m., Friday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in East Grand Forks, 200 Third St. N.W. Tickets are available at the door at the rates of $6 adults, $3 students and senior citizens or $12 family pass (two adults and two students). Military personnel are admitted free with Military ID.
Piano Masterclass
The Department of Music will present the final in a series of piano Master Classes for local teachers and students at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 28. These classes are held in the Josephine Campbell Recital Hall of the Hughes Fine Arts Center, and are free and open to the public. The goal of the class is to have strong ties to the people of UND's surrounding areas and to discuss the piano performance and pedagogy related matters through performance to sustain the high quality in piano performance and teaching.
'Trio Ferace' fund-raiser
Trio Ferace, a select group of University of North Dakota music students, will be performing at the Hopper-Danley Spiritual Center on campus, at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 28, as a fund-raiser for an upcoming musical trip to Japan. In May 2012, Trio Ferace will be traveling to Tokai University in Japan, where they will interact with local university students and collaborate on a final concert at the end of their stay. They will be staying in the homes of community members and will have an opportunity to experience the culture of the area.
Tickets for the concert are $10 and can be purchased through the Chester Fritz box office.
Cello recitals with Simona Barbu
The Department of Music and Dr. Simona Barbu, Burgum Endowed Chair of Cello at UND, will present a cello studio recital at 1 p.m., Sunday, April 29 in the Josephine Campbell Recital Hall in the Hughes Fine Arts Center on campus. This event is free and open to the public.
Barbu will play again at 8 p.m., Sunday, in the same location, this time, with guest pianist Eugene Alcalay. Tickets for this show are available at the door at the rates of $6 Adults, $3 Students & Senior Citizens or $12 Family Pass (2 Adults & 2 Students). Military personnel are admitted free with Military ID.
