The Oracle of Delphi stands atop the Adelphi Fountain near the English Coulee on the UND campus. In ancient Greece, travelers would come to Delphi to present questions to the Pythia, the priestess of Apollo. The answers were often cryptic and open to varying interpretations. Scholars also congregated at Delphi, making it an intellectual center.
The fountain was donated to the University in 1905 by the Adelphi Society, a literary group and UND’s first student organization. The first significant decorative fixture on the campus, it was installed in 1907. It was refurbished in 2007 through a bequest from the estate of the late Roy and Elnora (Hopper) Danley.
