Biography

Dexter Perkins grew up, mostly, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was an undergraduate at the University of Rochester before returning to Ann Arbor to attend Law School at the University of Michigan. After one semester he dropped out of Law School to pursue a degree in Natural Resources Management, but that, too, only lasted one semester. Subsequently, he transferred to Michigan's Department of Geology and received two graduate degrees. After departing Ann Arbor, he was on the faculty at the University of Chicago for three years before joining the faculty at the University of North Dakota. He is presently (in 2018) in his 37th year at UND. He is married and has two sons and one granddaughter.

Dexter Perkins's major areas of scientific research have been in metamorphic petrology and the thermodynamics of minerals systems. Additionally, he has been a student of pedagogy and has published a significant number of papers related to teaching and learning.

Dexter Perkins has written five books, published more than 40 scientific papers, authored many abstracts and technical reports, and regularly gives presentations at national meetings. A partial list of his publications is included in his CV attached to this website.

Dexter Perkins received a PhD. in Geology from the University of Michigan in 1979. Prior to that he received an MS in Geology from the University of Michigan in 1977, and a BS in Geology from the University of Rochester in 1973.
