Biography

Emily Gibbens-Buteau is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Dakota (UND). She earned her Ph.D. in Communication in 2023, as well as her M.A. and B.A. in Communication, all from UND. Before becoming a professor, she worked in the non-profit industry as the Generosity Coordinator for Altru Health Foundation where she specialized in communication and design, fundraising, and event planning. 

Her research primarily focuses on the trends in the journalism industry including local news consumption, digital media literacy, and new technologies. Her research has been presented at national conferences including American Academy of Advertising (AAA) and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Current Issues & Research in Advertising, Communication Research Reports, and Stigma and Health.
