Biography

Jessa Hulteng, Ph.D. is currently an Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy. She earned an AAS as an Occupational Therapy Assistant from Northland Community and Technical College, a Master’s in Occupational Therapy from the University of North Dakota, and most recently a PhD in Foundations of Educational Research from the University of North Dakota. Prior to joining the faculty full-time in 2017, she worked as an Occupational Therapist (2009-present) in a variety of settings. She has worked in acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, home health, group homes, and adult and pediatric outpatient settings. She is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. Other areas of specialization include driving evaluations, wheelchair evaluations, and NICU. Jessa serves on the Roster of Accreditation Evaluators for ACOTE, as well as SMHS and departmental committees. Her professional areas of interest include mental health, neurorehabilitation, lymphedema, wound care, cultural competence in healthcare professionals, and supporting student success.

  • Main areas of interest are with adult populations and related to vision, sensory re-education, desensitization, experiences of pain, and sensory processing in adults with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and neurologicial impairments.

Clinical experience:

Outpatient Rehabilitation Services - 2011-2017

  • The client population primarily included neurological, SCI, TBI, general debility, and a variety of other clients from pediatrics to aging adults.
  • Specialized areas of practice: Lymphedema, neurological rehabilitation, home safety evaluations, driving evaluations, wheelchair evaluations and modification, and custom wheelchair seating.

Home Health Care Services - 2011-2017

  • Client population primarily included general debility, orthopedics, neurological, lymphedema, and hospice clients.
  • Services provided were focused on safety within the home and community and increasing independence.

Acute Inpatient Hospital Services - 2009-2011

  • Patient population primarily included orthopedic, cardiac, trauma, neurological, general debility and NICU.
  • Responsibilities included working with acutely ill patients ranging in a variety of illnesses from birth through end of life.
