Biography

Malissa Kuznicki is a Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of North Dakota teaching both graphic design and jewelry and metalsmithing.  She earned her M.F.A in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from Bowling Green State University and a B.A. in Digital Art from the University of Toledo.  Her work was chosen for the cover of Metalsmith Magazine and she was a finalist for the Saul Bell Design Awards.  She has also exhibited work and published articles internationally.  She combines digital processes with traditional techniques to create wearable works that express the tension between multiple senses of self.  This is evident through the use of dichotomic imagery, materials, and process.  She references Victorian-era hair jewelry and fancywork to explore the tension between female identity and the gendered relationship of the history of craft.

Digital Foundations

With 25 years of computer-aided design experience, Malissa has a significant background in digital fabrication processes.  Her research involves victorian hair work, fancy work, and the history of women in craft.  She combines the reference to historical craft with digital processes exploring the still complicated relationship between craft, fancywork, and the female identity.

Malissa also has over 15 years of experience in the commercial jewelry industry with experience in mass production, repair, stone setting, and custom design.
