Biography
Scott M. Klara is the Associate Vice President for Strategic Partnerships at the EERC, where he assists the Vice President for Strategic Partnerships in building and growing dynamic relationships with industry, government, and research entities globally in support of the EERC’s mission to provide practical, pioneering solutions to the world’s energy and environmental challenges. He has over 32 years of diversified engineering and management experience that spans a broad spectrum of areas, including electric power generation, advanced separation processes, process control, oil and gas production, fossil energy conversion processes, and simulation/systems analysis. Before joining the EERC, Mr. Klara recently served in numerous leadership positions with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), which included Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary with DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy, Acting Director of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), and Deputy Director at NETL. He also served in several research and project/program management positions over key Fossil Energy areas throughout his DOE tenure. Early in his career, Mr. Klara held research positions for 7 years with AT&T Technologies ? Bell Laboratories and Calgon Carbon Corporation. Mr. Klara has given expert testimony on key fossil energy issues to Congress and has provided congressional staff briefings on clean coal programs, carbon capture and sequestration, and enhanced oil recovery, among other topics. He holds M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the same institution. He is a registered professional engineer in the states of Pennsylvania and West Virginia and the recipient of the Lignite Energy Council’s Distinguished Service Award for Research and Development. Mr. Klara has authored or coauthored numerous professional publications and given dozens of peer-reviewed presentations at key venues and conferences.
