Graduate Scholarships, Assistantships, and Waivers
The University of North Dakota Graduate School has many sources of financial assistance available to graduate students including assistantships, scholarships and tuition waivers. More information.
Tuition waivers and tuition remission are considered to be a part of a student’s financial aid package; therefore, they may replace some or all of a student’s financial aid eligibility.
Stipends (paid through a paycheck) are not considered to be financial aid, they are reported as income and may affect future financial aid eligibility.
Additional information regarding the affect of fellowships, stipends and assistantships on financial aid.
UND Employee, Spouse and Dependent Tuition Waiver
Employees, their spouse and dependents are eligible for a tuition waiver. More information is available through Human Resources.
Federal and State regulations require the University to coordinate and review all educationally related awards a student is receiving, including this tuition waiver, in determining their eligibility for need-based federal, state, and institutional aid.
This coordination must happen even if the need-based aid has already been disbursed to the student. In general, the combination of all awards cannot exceed a student’s financial aid need. If it does, need-based aid must be adjusted, normally reducing the student's loan burden or work-study obligation.
Most waivers are granted to assist with the same costs that are covered by financial aid, such as tuition, fees, room or board. Since a student may not receive assistance in excess of the budget for these costs, a waiver may trigger a revision of the financial aid.
- Note: if financial aid has already been disbursed to the student, the student may owe UND for the amount of financial aid that was adjusted due to the addition of the waiver award.
Additional Sources of Financial Assistance
There are many other sources of financial assistance available to UND students, such as Army ROTC scholarships, Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA)/Tribal Scholarship funds, North Dakota National Guard tuition waivers, Veterans Educational benefits, Vocational Rehabilitation, and the Gabriel J. Brown Trust Loan. Students should contact the appropriate agency or the Student Financial Aid Office for more information about these programs.
